OUR HERITAGE
Constructed in 1903, the historic Butterworth Building predates even Pike Place Market, marking it as one of Seattle’s true architectural gems. Originally designed as the city's first purpose-built mortuary, it featured innovative elements for its time, including the first elevator on the West Coast, intended to transport attendees between the chapel and the viewing gallery.
Known for its distinctive Beaux-Arts style, the building was crafted by the notable architect John Graham, Sr., who later contributed to Seattle's skyline with the iconic Space Needle. The Butterworth Building’s rich history is palpable, with rumors of it being haunted adding a layer of mystique to its storied walls.
Today, Karoo Café inhabits this remarkable building, transforming its historical ambiance into a vibrant hub of life, community, and connection. Every visit offers a glimpse into the past, while enjoying the dynamic and welcoming spirit of South Africa, right in the heart of Seattle.
